This window is in memory of John A. Dill, who, in his quiet unassuming way, was a faithful, active member of First Baptist for more than 60 years. The tree was chosen for the window because of a cute song about a tree and a nest that John used to sing to his children and grandchildren.
John moved to Mansfield with his family in 1929 when he was only 10 years old. He attended Sunday school and was baptized in 1935. When John was married in 1941, he brought his new wife to church. Through the years he served as a deacon, a trustee and a Sunday school teacher. He and his wife, Charlotte, were leaders of the church youth group for several years. John and Charlotte were also members of the Co-Weds, a group of married couples in the church who planned social events and fund raisers for the church and did much to create a great bond of fellowship among the members.
After the church fire in 1986, John was the treasurer for the Building Committee. He was always very handy with tools and in addition to paying the bills for all the work on the new church building, he pitched in whenever possible to help do the actual building. There are many pictures of him on a ladder in the new church. His ability to build and make repairs had been a very valuable resource for the old church building and was also very much valued as the new church was being built. |
